FIFA statement about Zidane's case

After the World Cup final incidents, FIFA said that it would hold behind closed doors the disciplinary hearing over Zinedine Zidane's case. The decision will be announced on Thursday.

"We inform that the case will take place behind closed doors without the presence of any members of the public or media," FIFA announced in a statement.

"After the two parties have been notified of its content, the Disciplinary Committee's move will be announced exclusively by means of a media release on the same date."

As we know, France's football legend Zinedine Zidane was sent off ten minutes before the end of the World Cup final against Italy for a headbutt on Marco Materazzi, which happened seconds after the Italian apparently insulted his mother and sister.

We can say that Zizou, as French fans endearingly call their talisman, made an apology, but refused to repent, saying the insult was "very personal".

This World Cup Final will be remembered for many years for the emotions, tension and surprising ending. After playing to a 1-1 draw through two overtimes, Italy defeated France 5-3 in a penalty shootout to win its fourth World Cup and first since 1982.

France was knocked off its feet when their star Zinedine Zidane, who led Les Bleus to the 1998 Cup, was ejected for inexplicably bashing his head into the chest of an Italian opponent late in the extra time.

"We knew that with what has happened with our football, a nation . . . has the strength to get back on its feet and win over the rest" said midfielder Gennaro Gattuso, referring to a match-fixing scandal that has rocked Italian league.

The game finished 1-1 in 120 minutes, including extra time. The first goal came from Zidane, who converted a penalty shoot in a brilliant way. Materazzi scored the equalizer with a good header. But the tension and the draw wouldn't move again.

Fabio Grosso, a defender, made the final shot in Italy's 5-3 penalty kick shootout triumph over France. Fellow defender Marco Materazzi made his shot in the shootout, too.

But it's what they did on the other end that made their squad special. Italy tied a World Cup record by allowing just two goals all tournament in route to the title. One of those was an own goal. They were the best and now they have the Cup.

In fact, the "Azurri" now ranks only one behind Brazil's record five championships.

"This is the most satisfying moment of my life," Italy coach Marcello Lippi expressed with the help of a translator. "The players have unlimited heart, character and personality."

Germany win the third place

Bayern Munich player Bastian Schweinsteiger made a night to remember, scoring two great individual goals and having a hand in the third, as Germany earned third place in the World Cup today.

In fact, this victory gave the home fans something to cheer and the players celebrated on the pitch at the final whistle, but both losing semi-finalists will be green with envy when they sit down to watch tomorrow's Berlin final between France and Italy.

It's important to notice that Jurgen Klinsmann, who is yet to announce if he will continue as Germany coach, was full of praise for his players.

"Honestly, it is unbelievable what this team has achieved. Every one of them has worked so hard, I just can't find words for it," he expressed.

About his future in the national team, Klinsmann said he needs time to come to a decision.

It's certainly not the game most people would have predicted but the quality on offer of Italy and France game on Sunday's World Cup final in Berlin could not be higher - or of a better vintage.

They are not young teams - as they were Spain or Germany - and they were not the favorites to reach the final. But Italy and France did, and that's mostly because they have experienced players with ambition of glory.

France may be the more senior of the teams but you have to get up pretty early to better the Italians at protecting their goal. The Azzurri, who will wear their blue on the night, have conceded just one goal in their six encounters and that an own goal from Cristian Zaccardo. Italy have been reassuringly accurate at the other end too. Coach Marcello Lippi's management of his forward men has led to 11 goals - joint top with Brazil and Argentina - scored by 10 different players.

We must remember that France destroyed Italian dreams in the Euro 2000 final. Now both coaches, Lippi and Domenech, are far too learned to have the word revenge enter their discourse on the match. However, when these two footballing neighbours meet, serious rivalry is never too far away.

We can say that with Zidane's last game, Cannavaro's 100th cap and no suspensions, Italy-France has the makings of a classic, and the World Cup really needs it.

Horacio Elizondo will be the referee

These are good news for him and for Argentina: Horacio Elizondo was selected to be the referee of the World Cup final between three-time champion Italy and 1998 winner France.

It's good to remember that Elizondo, a 42-year-old physical education teacher, officiated in Portugal's quarter-final victory over England, when he sent off England player Wayne Rooney for stepping on Portugal defender Ricardo Carvalho.

The popular referee also was at the opening match on June 9, when host Germany beat Costa Rica 4-2 in Munich.

We must mention that Dario Garcia and Rodolfo Otero, also of Argentina, will work the sidelines for the game at the Olympic Stadium in Berlin, FIFA general secretary Urs Linsi said on Thursday.

"We've had lots of American, South American and Latin American referees and we've been treated very good," said Giancarlo Abete, the chief of Italy's World Cup squad. "We've shown a lot of respect for the referee's decisions and those of the disciplinary committee."

According to official sources, Japan's Toru Kamikawa will handle today's third-place match between Germany and Portugal in Stuttgart. Yoshikazu Hiroshima of Japan and Kim Dae-young of South Korea will run the lines.

It's important to notice that FIFA vice president Lennart Johansson said Elizondo was a great choice, and he backed the official's decision to send Rooney off against Portugal.

Zidane takes France to the World Cup Final

However, while the talented Manchester United player strained France's notoriously well-glued defences, he tried too often to turn Portugal's attack into a one-man show.

But history will tell that in Wednesday's semi-final, it was the Zidane penalty curse that crushed the Portuguese and handed them their first defeat in 18 encounters.

Indeed, a 33rd-minute penalty shot by Zizou was enough to stop Portugal by the same score this time - six years after a "Zizou" spot kick ousted them in a tumultuous 2002 European championship semi-final that saw Figo walk off the field really angry.

It's fair top say that Zidane, three-time World Footballer of the Year, plans to retire from the game after this World Cup, but it was clear he wanted the shot at that second trophy. He directed the French like a king -- occasionally acting a bit like one too, when he was fouled.

The was was more like a war since the very first minute. Italians and Germans performed a very tough battle in Dortmund.

The victory was fair with the football they showed, between two heartful teams that wanted to win at their own style. Ballack and Klose later Odonkor were trying to show the path to victory.

However, the game was very equilibrated. Everybody in the stadium and in front of the televisions were preparing for the penalty shootouts. The physical effort was too big and the Germans could barely walk.

And that was the mortal minute - the very last minute - when the italian team scored their goals. Two goals in the last 30 seconds of action, and the host country will cry forever. Grosso and Del Piero made it possible.

Three time winners, Germany and Italy will take the centre stage today in Dortmund to fight for one of the 2006 World Cup final’s ticket.

We can say that before this games, reaching the semi-finals would have been considered an achievement following the spate of criticisms that followed the two sides preparatory to the commencement of this World Cup.

In the other semifinal, Portugal, who defeated England in penalties, will have to stop an amazing France. The "Bleus" shocked the Cup when they defeated superfavorite Brazil, with a 1-0 scored by Thierry Henry.

Europe is the only part of the World that had enough talent to reach this stage. Now one of these nations will be singing the most beautiful music: "We are the Champions".

French team suffered too much to qualify

France had to fight really hard to get into the second round of the World Cup on Friday. They defeat Togo by 2-0 to finish second in the Group G.

Juventus' midfielder Patrick Vieira broke the scoreless deadlock in the 55th minute, taking a pass from midfielder Franck Ribéry in the penalty area and swiveling to drive the ball into the right corner of the net. It was a goal of immense class in an inspirational match for Vieira.

A head pass from Vieira in the 61st minute steered the ball into Henry's path. The Arsenal player brought it down and, from about 15 feet, buried the ball in the bottom left corner to make the score 2-0. Henry has not always been at his best in the French jersey, but this was ruthless finishing from one of the game's most elegant frontline man.

France ended second in this group and will have to play against Spain in the next stage. Switzerland was the best team in the zone and will face Ucrania.

Brazil beat Japan and win the Group F

Keiji Tamada score the first for Japan with a violent shot but Ronaldo equalized in the last minute of the first half, with a good header.

In the last part, Gilberto finished a long run with a very good shot and beat the Japanese goalkeeper. Ronaldo scored the third with an excellent shot from outside the area. And Juninho netted the last goal with an impressive blast from 30 meters.

This victory saw Brazil advance with maximum points to a last 16 meeting with rank outsiders Ghana after the "verdeamarelha" extended their winning run to a record ten games, going back to the start of their successful 2002 campaign.

Real Madrid's Ronaldo was all smiles afterwards as he showed that he was by no means over the hill following two predatory finishes which saw off a Japan side who dared to take the lead. “The record wasn’t my main goal. You have to keep working and not lose heart,” said the 29-year-old star, who added that the support of his family “has carried me through the tough times,” including another injury-ravaged season.

Italy eliminates the Czech Republic

In one of the most important results of the tournament, Italy won the Group E this morning, and eliminate the 10-man Czech Republic with a 2-0 victory in Hamburg.

Thanks to a 26th-minute header from substitute Marco Materazzi, the Italians the lead before the Czechs were reduced to 10 men just before the break with the dismissal of Jan Polak.

Milan striker Filippo Inzaghi rounded goalkeeper Petr Cech to roll home the second in the 87th minute as the Czechs threw everyone forward.

It's very important to remember that the Czechs sorely missed injured forward Jan Koller and suspended striker Vratislav Lokvenc, and it was left to midfielder Pavel Nedved to provide the attacking creativity.

Buffon dealt well with a dipping drive but could only parry out many Nedved efforts - although the Italy keeper did well to smother Marek Jankulovski's follow-up.

It's fair to mention that Italy's problems increased in the 17th minute when they were forced into a change - Alessandro Nesta, suffering from what appeared to be a recurrence of his troublesome muscle injury, limping off to be replaced by defender Materazzi.

The good luck entered with him. Nine minutes after joining the match, the big central defender headed the Azzurri in front with his first goal for the national side leaping superbly above Polak to power a header past Petr Cech.

Italy's grip on the match got tighter just before the break when Polak was dismissed for a second bookable offence for a foul from behind on midfielderTotti.

That left Karel Brueckner's side down to 10 men for a second half in which they needed to score two goals to keep themselves in the World Cup, and the Czech coach made a switch at the break bringing on attack-minded Jiri Stajner for veteran Karel Poborsky.

And then Totti, still looking far from his best, was given space for a long range effort that Cech pushed round the post in the 53rd minute.

Argentina win the first position after 0-0 draw with the Netherlands

It was one of the most expected derbies in this World Cup but they didn't even score a goal. The Netherlands and Argentina got a 0-0 draw and advanced into the knockout stage of the World Cup, while Cote d'Ivoire and Serbia and Montenegro played just for the honor.

Even though there were glimpses of brilliance from both teams, the Netherlands and Argentina seemed content to see the match out for the draw, having already qualified for the last 16 after winning their opening two encounters in the group.

It's interesting to know that in the last attack of the night, Carlos Tevez got the best chance for Argentina in the injury time when he stabbed the ball to the goal after a group of dazzling steps past the Dutch defence, but it missed the target.

"We didn't play the kind of football that we like to play, but we were facing a very strong squad," Argentina coach Perkman admitted.

According to the experts, the Argentines seemingly found their scintillating form in a 6-0 win over Serbia and Montenegro last Friday.

England and Sweden tied 2-2 in a very exciting game that gave them the ticket to the second stage. The English team still cannot beat Sweden.

The English side went in front when Joe Cole hit a sensational lob from 35 yards, but then Marcus Allback equalised when he headed home from a right-wing corner.

The coach made a wise decision and Steven Gerrard headed in Joe Cole's 85th-minute cross, but Henrik Larsson levelled for Sweden in injury time.

The bad luck, however, hit the English squad. A knee injury to striker Michael Owen will have him miss the rest of the tournament.

TOp scorer Miroslav Klose, now with four goals, netted twice against the Ecuatorian goalkeeper.

The host team were clearly taking the threat of a possible match against England more seriously than Ecuador and, even though they had already qualified, they played at full strength.

It's important to mention that Germany started the World Cup with some uncertainty over their prospects, but their qualification for the knockout stages has been incredibly easy.

In fact, Germany may not have faced any sort of proper test yet, having played against a really limited Costa Rica, a terrible Poland and now the weak Ecuador, but they have beaten every squad they have faced, and not once seriously looked in any danger of not getting all three points they needed.

Now Germany will lay against Sweden, the second of Group B, and Ecuador will face powerhouse England, in a very difficult challenge for them.

Brazil found a very hard team in Australia. Despite the 2-0 of the "verdeamarelha", the "Socceroos" made a really good game and deserved better luck.

In fact, those moves inspired the Croatian forwards to go in search of the equalizer and goalkeeper Dida was kept busy at the other end as Dado Prso, Marko Babic and Jerko Leko kept the Brazilians in danger.

FIFA's president Joseph Blatter, Franz Beckenbauer and Germany's president Horst Köhler gave the entry speech in the Ceremony.

After that, many World Cup winners from England, France, Argentina, Italy, Germany and Brazil walked into the pitch to receive a warm ovation.

And the Ceremony finished with a musical piece by Herbert Gronemeyer and an African pop Group. The passion of football was greatly expressed in the show. Now the ball will kick off and millions of fans will keep the track.

Cissé suffers horrible injury and will miss the Cup

French striker Djibril Cissé suffered a heartbraking injury that will take him away from the World Cup. He got a broken leg in France’s friendly game over China in St Etienne.

The striker was chasing the ball down the right flank and was simply knocked off balance by an opposing defender. England arrives in Germany with Rooney and Defoe

As we saw, Sven-Goran Eriksson and Football Association chief executive Brian Barwick were handed large bunches of red roses and white lilies by local officials.

David Beckham, one of the symbols of this team, was the first player off the plane, followed by injured striker Wayne Rooney. The Manchester United forward returns to England on Wednesday to have another scan on his broken right foot. England has until Friday to decide whether to keep Wayne Rooney or call up standby striker Jermain Defoe, who also travelled to Germany.

According to our sources, England is staying at the isolated Schlosshotel Buhlerhohe, in the mountains above the spa town of Baden-Baden.

The British team had trained outside London before flying to Germany. Beckham and defenders Ashley Cole and John Terry were rested because of ankle, thigh and knee injuries. FA spokesman Adrian Bevington expressed that they sat out training purely as a precaution and would all be available for England's first match against Paraguay on Saturday in Frankfurt.

Pernia goes to the World Cup for Spain

Hard work for Ronaldo

Many stars that will be in the World Cup took part of the Final. Ronaldinho, Deco, Larsson, Puyol and Marquez in Barcelona. Arsenal has almost all their squad in the national teams for the Cup. Thierry Henry, Ljumberg, Lehmann, Campbell, Reyes, Cole, Toure. However, the two players who gave Barcelona the victory (Eto'o and Belleti) won't be in Germany.

Manchester United coach Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed that Wayne Rooney has two fractures in his right foot, even though he says the second break is a cause for concern.

In fact, Rooney's chances of making this summer's World Cup look precarious after suffering the injury last weekend. However, Sir Alex is keen to avoid panic after revealing the second fracture.

"The break he's got in the fourth metatarsal is a small fracture," he admitted. "The one above it is nothing to worry about at all, it doesn't affect the recovery. It's just a little hairline fracture.

"You can't put a deadline on it until we see the scan result. He'll go back for one in a few weeks and if it's healed then we've got the progress we want. But if it hasn't, we've just have to carry on with the treatment. There's nothing you can do about it.

The Gaffer also revealed Wayne will be taking an unorthodox approach to quicken his recovery.

"An oxygen chamber is arriving this afternoon," he said. "Hopefully that treatment will help.

"I know there's no conclusive evidence that it does help the recovery, but there's no evidence against it either and it won't do any harm. Everything is worth a try at this stage.

"We really need to wait and see how it develops and improves when he does the next scans but you can be sure we'll do our best to get him there."

We must say that Sir Alex was also keen to reiterate that the club will not allow Rooney's future career to be jeopardised and if he is not fit, he will not take part of the Cup in Germany.

"We won't do anything to jeopardise him - period," declared the coach. "We hope he can play but if not we'll make sure he's fully recovered before the start of next season."

The Allianz Arena needs new pitch

The pitch at Munich's new stadium - The Allianz Arena, which will host the opening match of the World Cup on June 9, is being replaced, Bayern Munich said on Tuesday.

According to the people of Bayern Munich,the new pitch of the Allianz Arena Stadium would be in place for Sunday's home Bundesliga game against Schalke 04.

Wintry weather damaged the pitch which was re-laid last November.

"Even Barcelona would have problems playing on a pitch in that state," Bayern coach Felix Magath claimed.

The Munich stadium needed repairs earlier this month after a bearing in a joint between two concrete slabs was damaged.

We must notice that it is not the first stadium in Germany to require repairs ahead of the World Cup.This month cracks were discovered in a supporting column at the brand-new Frankfurt arena, which has also had a leaky roof.

In fact, in Kaiserslautern, a Bundesliga game had to be called off last December after a crack appeared in the east stand of the 85-year-old Fritz-Walter-Stadion.

The opening game between Germany and Costa Rica will be played in the Munich stadium, which cost 280 million euros ($335 million) and was opened one year ago.

World Cup Teams to have Friendly Games

The World Cup is approaching and thirty of the 32 nations will play in friendly games this week. Only Togo and Australia will be inactive this days. Most of the action this week takes place in Europe on Wednesday — exactly 100 days before the World Cup starts June 9.

“It’s not time for experiments,” Brazilian coach Carlos Alberto Parreira said.

The United States will be missing captain Claudio Reyna, recovering from ankle surgery, but will have most of its other Europe-based players for the first time this year for Wednesday night’s game. The Americans are 3-0-1 in World Cup warmups this year.

Other matches on Wednesday include defending champion Brazil at Russia; Uruguay at England, Germany at Italy, Slovakia at France, Ivory Coast at Spain and Ecuador at the Netherlands. Argentina plays Croatia at Basel, Switzerland.

What's more, on Tuesday, World Cup newcomer Trinidad and Tobago meets Iceland in London and Japan faces Bosnia-Herzegovina in Dortmund, Germany.

Brazil is without five injured players who are likely to be on its 23-man World Cup roster: midfielder Ronaldinho, defenders Cafu and Roque Junior, and goalkeepers Dida and Julio Cesar.

Spain coach Luis Aragones expects a tough test against African Cup of Nations runner-up Ivory Coast.

“In terms of individual ability, it’s the best African squad,” said Aragones, who thinks Chelsea’s Didier Drogba and Arsenal’s Kolo Toure are the most dangerous players.

England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson chose several fringe players for his squad to face Uruguay at Liverpool’s Anfield Stadium, missing eight regulars who are hurt.

Eriksson has named rookie forward Darren Bent and given Wes Brown, Kieran Richardson and Luke Young the chance to impress.

In the competitive world of sports brands, Nike president Charlie Denson on Monday unveiled Nike's latest football-related products and World Cup squad uniforms in a promotion that was as much metaphor as business promotion move.

In fact, just as Nike staged its launch in Germany, the home of Nike's main competitor, Adidas-Salomon AG, so is Nike intruding on Adidas' football business -- the corporation's heritage. Nike, which said 12 years ago that it wanted to be No. 1 in the football business, is rolling out one of its largest business promotion campaigns ever for the 2006 World Cup in its quest for that title.

Still, it's a tough year to try to knock Adidas off its throne. The World Cup is being held in Germany this summer, and Adidas is an official sponsor of the event and sponsor of Germany's three-time-winning national team.

Adidas will provide the balls for the matches and -- in a blow to Nike, which frequently runs commercials during big sports events -- has locked up a deal that ensures Adidas is the only athletic brand to air commercials on English-language broadcasts of the matches in the United States.

"Adidas has really put together a really strategic package for the World Cup," said John Horan, publisher of Sporting Goods Intelligence, an industry newsletter. "That's going to be insane for Nike to try and outsell them."

As you can see, figuring out who is No. 1 and who is No. 2 depends on what you include. Many analysts said Adidas has the edge when counting products used for football, not casual products that have football styling, which Nike counts in its estimates.

Still, it doesn't significantly change the landscape. "I don't believe it really matters who's number one except for woofing rights," said Matt Powell, contributing editor for Sports Executive Weekly, another industry newsletter. "There's a lot of woofing going around."

Nike, based near Beaverton, has made considerable strides in a sport long dominated by Adidas. In recent months, it has launched several products, ranging from casual football-inspired T-shirts to hard-core football boots. It sponsors the Brazilian national team, which beat Germany for the 2002 World Cup title.

That competition on the field may well determine who gains the upper hand -- for a while, at least -- in the football wars.

Turkey will appeal Fifa punishment

Turkish media is very angry with Fifa's punishment which orders Turkey to play its next six home games abroad and behind closed doors, in a move seen as jeopardising its chances of qualifying for Euro 2008.

The punishment imposed by FIFA was in response to violent scenes witnesses at their World Cup qualifier against Switzerland in Istanbul.

Turkey has vowed to appeal the sanction, which their sports minister described as politically motivated, and influenced by the Swiss Fifa President Sepp Blatter.

The sanctions, which apply to official games and not friendly ones, are among the most severe handed out to a national association and papers said it unfairly punished the fans.

In fact, that means that Turkey must play their entire qualification programme for the 2008 European championships abroad. They have been drawn alongside European champions Greece, Norway, Bosnia, Hungary, Moldova and Malta in qualifying Group C.

"What is the spectator's crime? An unfair punishment from Fifa," the daily Sabah newspaper said in a front-page headline.

What's more, the paper published Fifa's phone and fax numbers and called on readers to send a protest letter to Blatter, providing a sample letter in English.

"It is obvious that you don't want to see our country in Switzerland at Euro 2008 but I am sure we will succeed in qualifying for the finals. We will be there," the text said.

Fifa said in a statement yesterday that two Turkish players, Alpay Ozalan and Emre Belozoglu, would be banned for six matches as would Switzerland's Benjamin Huggel who admitted kicking Turkish assistant coach Mehmet Ozdilek.

Turkey were also fined 200,000 Swiss francs ($154,200). A number of other players and officials from both teams received fines and suspensions.

Turkey's football federation said it would appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Fifa board held a meeting on Monday and Tuesday at their Zurich headquarters to decide the sanctions.

USA beat Norway and show a great performance

The United States football team prepares for the World Cup. The players took advantage of a weak opponent and overwhelmed a young Norway side 5-0 in a friendly this afternoon at The Home Depot Center in Carson, California.

Forward Taylor Twellman scored three times, while defender Eddie Pope and midfielder Chris Klein each added one goal as the U.S. cruised to an easy victory.

It’s good to notice that the U.S. face a Norway's with under-23 players today. The Norwegians failed to qualify for the World Cup this summer in Germany after they were dealt a pair of 1-0 defeats by the Czech Republic in a two-game playoff.

Norway is now pointing toward the 2008 European championships. Only one player in today's lineup was with Norway at the time it faced the Czechs. Earlier in the week, Mexico downed this Norway team 2-1 in San Francisco.

U.S. coach Bruce Arena thinks this was "our best week of training so far”. He said that the U.S. came out much more aggressively today than in last Sunday's 0-0 draw with Canada in San Diego. The Americans pushed the ball from the start and the intensity quickly paid dividends.

In the game, Twellman settled a nice cross from midfielder Clint Dempsey and put the ball under Norway goalkeeper Espen Johnsen for a 1-0 lead in the fifth minute. In the 21st minute, Twellman got under a free kick from defender Todd Dunivant and headed it past Espen. The result was never in doubt after that.

The U.S. was helped by some very poor marking on Norway's part. Twellman was pretty much unmarked on all three of his goals. Pope was given an open point-blank shot for his goal and no defender was able to reach Chris Klein at the time midfielder Landon Donovan fed him for an open 20-yarder that became the final American tally.

The lack of defending was surprising because Norway consistently dropped six and seven players behind the ball. All this strategy accomplished was giving the U.S. all kinds of room in the midfield.

The U.S. back-line was hardly challenged. Pope and Jimmy Conrad were solid and organized in the central defense while Frankie Hejduk regularly pushed the ball up the right wing.

The U.S. dominance was demonstrated by its 24-2 shots advantage, 13-1 on goal.

It has been four grinding weeks for the U.S. players in a long training camp in Carson. A victory such as this can be enjoyed, but not for long. A more difficult challenge awaits with a game against Japan in San Francisco in two weeks as preparations for the World Cup intensify. It will be interesting to see if the Americans can put together two solid efforts in a row.

World Cup Germany 2006 organisers to face stadium critics

Czech Republic could miss Jan Koller at World Cup

Host Germany Happy with their Group

Germany reacted with relief and delight at the draw that gave the World Cup host a relatively simple-to-win group with Ecuador,Costa Rica and Poland - and avoid stronger rivals like Portugal or Netherlands.

The Netherlands was the non-seeded squad all the teams didn't want and the Germans were weary of a group that would pit them against the neighbors. But the Dutch ended up in one of the toughest groups with Argentina, Serbia-Montenegro and Ivory Coast, while the Germans couldn't keep the smiles off their faces.

"We are very pleased," coach Klinsmann said. "It could have been much worse".

"We think that this is a double group. All rivals are difficult, we don't want to underestimate any team. But we have a great feeling."

Kilnsmann said Ecuador is very a strong team at home, but playing in Germany will be different.

"Costa Rica shouldn't be underestimated and Poland is surely a hurdle, they played very good qualifications. But we have to get through," the German Coach said. "Now we know what we face and we are looking forward. The draw gave us a little help and now we can start."

Should Germany win Group A, it's second-round opponent could be England.

The Germans will kick off the Cup against Costa Rica on June 9 in Munich. The final will take place on July 9 in Berlin.

Explaining the World Cup Draw System

The World Cup draw for the group stages will take place in Leipzig tomorrow. Here we give a quick outline to how the draw process will be.

We will see a first pool of eight seeded teams. The squads, including England, were seeded based on their performance at the 1998 and 2002 World Cups and also their FIFA world ranking in 2003, 2004 and 2005.

As soon as a nation is drawn from pools two, three or four, another draw will then take place to allocate this team their place in the group, which will decide the order of the group fixtures.

If possible, teams from the same confederation will be kept apart, the exception being UEFA-affiliated nations where a maximum of two are permitted in each group. Serbia and Montenegro are in a separate pot, and is going to go into a group containing one of three non-European seeds - Brazil, Argentina or Mexico.

Germany have been placed in Group A. They will kick off the tournament in Munich, before moving to Dortmund and completing their group campaign in Berlin, where the final will be staged.

FIFA spokesman Andreas Herren told us: "The tradition with the opening game played by the world champions goes back to 1974."

"The cause of this change was that in November 2001 the FIFA executive committee decided that the reigning world champions would not any longer qualify for the finals automatically. At the time of putting the match calendar together, the only team sure to qualify was Germany, hence the move to have them play the opener."

Where two squads finish level on points, the first criterion to separate the sides will be the outcome of the group match or matches (if more than two sides) between them. If the match was a draw, goal difference will be the second criterion, then goals scored. In the end, if the teams still cannot be separated, lots will be drawn by the World Cup organising committee.

Brazil, Germany and Mexico among the 8 seeds for World Cup draw

"Germany will be seeded in slot A1 in the draw and Brazil in F1, and there were economic factors involved in this decision as those teams are guaranteed to play in larger stadiums."

One team from each pot will be drawn into the eight groups in the first stage of the finals in Germany which run from June 9 to July 9.

Hooligans may damage World Cup 2006

Germany's fight to cut out hooligans ahead of the World Cup suffered a setback on Saturday when Hamburg's Alexander Laas was left with blood pouring from a head wound after being hit by missiles thrown from the crowd. Trouble flared when Cologne away fans threw several objects, including wooden drumsticks, onto the pitch in their 3-1 Bundesliga win.

Benjamin Lauth scored in the 54th minute to put hosts Hamburg two goals in front and it was during the post-goal celebrations that Cologne fans reacted angrily.

Plastic cups and drumsticks swamped the pitch and the 21-year-old Laas, a 17th minute substitute for Rafael van der Vaart, was pictured with blood gushing from his head.

"I went to celebrate with my teammates and got hit by a hard object," recalled the midfielder.

"I did not know what it was but the head still hurts now. That is obviously not part of football."

Referee Jochen Drees stopped play and Laas played on after being patched up by the Hamburg medical team but there are sure to be consequences with World Cup hosts Germany adopting a zero tolerance policy.

"That is the ugly side of football," explained Hamburg striker Sergei Barbarez.

"It should not happen particularly with the World Cup in Germany just around the corner."

Pires wants to be in World Cup

Arsenal midfielder Robert Pires, wnat to be part of the France squad for next year's World Cup. That's why he said on Sunday he has apologised to coach Raymond Domenech for his behaviour.

Pires, who was world champion with France in 1998, criticised manager Domenech in an interview with France Football magazine last year. He has not been nominated by Domenech since a World Cup qualifier in Cyprus in October 2004.

"I had a conversation with the coach a few days ago. I wanted to apologise," he told French television channel TF1.

"I said things during a bad period in my life but I never wanted to hurt the squad," he added.

"He (Domenech) did not ask me to apologise."

Pires said he was inspired by English-based France rugby international Thomas Castaignede, who made his return to the French squad in October after a lengthy absence.

"Thomas Castaignede's return gives me a lot of hope. Actually he is the one who told me to talk to the coach," Pires said.

"I still believe I can make it for the 2006 World Cup."

Switzerland scraped through to the World Cup finals on Wednesday on away goals after drawing 4-4 with Turkey over two legs in their European play-off.

Turkey won a thrilling return match 4-2 but Switzerland, leading 2-0 after an impressive performance in Saturday's first leg in Bern, clinched their place at Germany 2006.

The Czech Republic were celebrating their first World Cup appearance with a 1-0 win over Norway after defeating the Scandinavians by the same margin in the first leg.

Australian soocer team accomplished a "Mission Impossible" this wednesday at Sydney's Telstra Stadium: They defeated Uruguay in the penalty shootout and qualifyed to the World Cup Germany 2006 for the first time in 32 years.

Australia goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer became a national hero after stopping two penalty kicks. He said they feel great delight in defeating Uruguay to reach the World Cup after questioning the sportsmanship of the South Americans during the play-off.

Schwarzer stopped the shots from Marcelo Zalayeta and Dario Rodriguez. John Aloisi tucked away Australia's fifth spot-kick to secure a 4-2 win on penalties in Sydney's Telstra Stadium.

There was little between the two teams over the 210 minutes of soccer played in the past four days, and it seemed inevitable after Marco Bresciano levelled the scores on aggregate with a 35th minute goal that it would end in extra time in the cruellest fashion imaginable for one team.

Hiddink, who surprised many with his decision to bench Kewell, left out striker Archie Thompson, bringing in hometown hero Tim Cahill and Bresciano, who had come off the bench in Montevideo to such telling effect.

Diego Forlan didn't go with the South american team. He played just 17 minutes of Saturday's match after struggling with a leg injury for the past two weeks.

The Socceroos' charter arrived with all players on board, free of injury and able to stretch out and relax on the plane which was specially fitted with massage tables.

Spain wins over Slovakia 5 - 1

Spain took a big step to be in the World Cup Germany 2006 when they beated Slovakia 5-1 on Saturday. The scenario was Vicente Calderon stadium and the main showman was Luis Garcia scoring a hat trick.

Atletico Madrid's Torres converted a penalty and Morientes added the fifth goal. Substitute Szilard Nemeth netted Slovakia's consolation goal early in the second half following a mistake by Garcia.

Italian referee Massimo De Santis ejected Slovakia coach Galis and defender Marian Had for protesting. Galis went after Garcia's second goal and Had was sent off after the penalty.

"In the World Cup, you have the best players and the best squads," Galis said. "You should also have the best referees. We knew we could lose but we didn't think it would happen in this way. Some of the refereeing decisions were incredible."

Uruguay found almost no open spaces on the attack, in their attempt to break the Australian defence. Even a free kick by Diego Forlan in the second minute was batted away by Australian goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer.

Mark Viduka later booted a 35-meter shot that Fabian Carini managed to knock away with an amazing save. The ball went bouncing harmlessly into a corner.

Diego Forlan, who was Uruguay's top scorer in South American qualifying, had to leave the field in the first half because of a left leg muscle pull that was acting up. He had not been expected to play after injuring himself recently while playing for Villarreal.

In the 47th minute, Australia nearly missed when Viduka took a pass from teammate Scott Chipperfield and kicked it wide of the net. In the final minutes, Jason Culina booted a powerful shot for Australia that also skidded wide of the net.

Four years ago, Uruguay lost the first leg 1-0 in Melbourne but won on aggregate after a 3-0 victory in Montevideo. The final match of that series was marred by rowdy fan incidents that caused a near international incident as Australian players complained they were harassed and spat upon.

Heavy security was in place around the Socceroos this time around and there was no repeat of any fan incidents.

England beats Argentina with Owen double score

Wayne Rooney equilized after AC Milan's Hernan Crespo scored for Argentina (1-1). Walter Samuel put the second goal in the 54th minute. That was when Michael Owen showed all his power.

Owen scored in the 86th and then jumped to get Cole's pass and makethe winner goal in the second minute of injury time (3 - 2). It was his third goal in three games against Argentina.

"To come back twice was great, these are what these warm up games for the World Cup are for," Owen said. "It was cracking, excitement, so much more to it than a friendly. Even when they scored, their fans and their players were going mad."

Owen's goals came after Argentina took off playmaker Juan Ramon Riquelme, who had a standout game for his team and played a major part in both his team's goals.

Riquelme, who forced goalkeeper Paul Robinson into an acrobatic fifth-minute push over the top, was controlling midfield and regularly brought Crespo and Carlos Tevez into play around the edge of the England area.

In one move, Robinson blocked a close range Tevez shot and England defenders threw themselves in front of drives by Crespo and Maxi Rodriguez. Robinson then forced another powerful drive by Rodriguez around the post.

"There were chances at both ends, it really could have gone either way today," Owen said. "That just shows you there's not much between the top few teams in the world."

Owen had already had the ball in the net when Argentina had a 12th-minute goal by Crespo ruled out for a foul. At the same time there was fighting in the crowd at the other end of the ground.

The trouble was quickly brought under control and the game continued at a fast pace with Argentina taking the lead in the 34th.

Rooney lost the ball to Riquelme on the right flank and the Villarreal playmaker switched the ball to Tevez, with the England defense pulled out of position. Rodriguez fired in a low cross from the right and Crespo was the first of two Argentines waiting to turn the ball home.

Rooney almost made it 1-1 when he took a pass from Gerrard. He floated the ball over goalkeeper Roberto Abbondanzieri but the ball struck the post and bounced clear.

In the 39th, David Beckham challenged two defenders in the air just inside the area. The ball bounced into space and Rooney got past Roberto Ayala to shoot into the net from 12 meters (yards).

Spain has home advantage at Atletico Madrid's Vicente Calderon stadium and can't afford to slip up. Aragones is under pressure to achieve a big lead to take to Bratislava for the second leg on Wednesday. The veteran coach has already hinted he won't stay on if the team fails to make it to the World Cup for the eighth time in a row.

"What's essential is to win. And if it's by two goals, that's better than one. And if it's by three, even better," Aragones said. "I think we're superior in terms of our technical ability and we have to use this to make sure of victory. I think we can win both here and there. I'm sure we'll be in Germany."

Although it is one of soccer's traditional powerhouses, Spain has a poor record in international championships. Its lone victory was the 1964 European Championship and, since a fourth-place finish in 1950, it has never been past the quarterfinals of the World Cup.

Slovakia is trying to get there for the first time since the breakup of Czechoslovakia in 1993.

"We are going to do everything in our power so that everyone who knows nothing about Slovakia will remember us," coach Dusan Galis said. "These games are the most important in our players' careers, and in the careers of those of us who support them."

Forlan may miss Uruguay - Australia play-off

Uruguay has many concerning situations when preparing to face Australia in the World Cup pay-off. The south american squad has suffered a blow with striker Diego Furlan all but ruled out of this important match.

FC Villarreal (Forlan's club) said their star player had torn a muscle in his left leg and could be sidelined for up to three weeks.

Uruguay take on Australia in two World Cup qualifying play-offs with the winner advancing to the 2006 World Cup in Germany.

The first match will take place in Montevideo on November 12 with the return leg in Sydney on November 16.

Forlan sustained the injury during his side's 1-0 victory over Benfica in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Villarreal said Forlan would travel to Uruguay to see if there was any chance he might be able to play in the tie.

The Primera Liga club said if the Uruguay team doctors agreed the striker would not be able to recover in time for the play-off he would return to Spain to complete his rehabilitation.

Forlan topped Uruguay's scoring list during the South American qualifiers with six goals.

The 26-year-old also faces a race against time to be fit for the clash against his former club Manchester United in Villarreal's next Champions League match at Old Trafford on November 22.

Uruguayan coach Jorge Fossati is also sweating on the fitness of his two goalkeepers for the opening leg.

Sebastian Viera and Fabian Carini were both included in Fossati's 27-man squad despite battling injuries.

Viera, who plays for Villarreal in Spain, injured his left collarbone on Sunday in a Spanish league match with doctors fearing he could be out for two weeks.

Carini, who plays for Cagliari in Italy, is also fighting to be fit because of a muscle strain.

Defender Diego Lopez (sciatic nerve problem) and midfielder Marcelo Sosa (ankle) also have injury concerns.
